We are lonely when people in our life do not meet our needs or we have experiences that other people don't understand because they haven't experienced it. For example: being someone who needs extra supports and not being able to get it. Another example: experiencing grief and being confused when others got over their grief and they don't understand why we are still feeling it.
You don't have to be alone to feel lonely. You can be lonely around other people.
